Austin: The Capital Story of Texas
Possibly the number one student field trip destination in Texas, Austin offers so much for students to see and do. The option of activities and locations you can cover is very strong. Students will be treated to both indoor and outdoor activities on this tour.
The presenters on this field trip include: historical specialists at each of the places listed brlow, as well as the lecturers from Heritage Tours. And, a meeting, based on availability with the State senator or State representative from your area.
Tour Highlights
- The State Capitol and Visitors Center
one of the most important buildings in Texas. Our private tour will explain to the students the history of this magnificent building and the workings of state government. A separate outdoors tour will tell us about the monuments on the grounds. - The Bullock Texas State History Museum
including all three floors of historical displays, The Spirit of Texas film and the special temporary exhibit. This new museum is the talk of Texas and must be visited by every student, young or old, of Texas culture. - The State Cemetery
Our guide will show us the resting places of numerous important Texans, with biographical descriptions of their lives and meaning to Texas. Governors, generals, cultural leaders, and Texans of all types lie in rest here. - The French Legation
This “embassy” of a foreign country, being the oldest dwelling in Austin, will allow the students the opportunity to study the Republic period. An added bonus here will be the “Pages from the Past” Program, where students learn to use authentic old documents to do historical research. - The Republic of Texas Museum
Members of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas will show us through their exhibits on Texas 19th century history. - O. Henry Museum
Our visit to the home of the excellent short story writer William Sydney Porter will teach the students about his writings and colorful background. - Elisabet Ney Museum
Ney’s studio is where students will learn about the most accomplished sculptress in Texas annals and her impact on the State’s artistic community and cultural development. - LBJ Library
The official library and museum for President Lyndon Johnson. - Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve
On the western edge of town is this scenic, rugged Hill Country nature area. Our guides will explain to us the geology and plant and animal life of this region. - City of Austin
its history as seen in a walking and driving tour, including the Bremond Block, the Moonlight Towers, the Governors Mansion, and other important sites.
Special added treats for those coming to Austin from the north:
- West and the “Crash at Crush”
The rest stop on the way to Austin will be at the Czech community of West where we will learn about the amazing planned train wreck, the “Crash at Crush”. - Salado and the Stagecoach Inn
We will have lunch Thursday at this historic 1850s Inn where Texas greats have dined for 150 years.
