Waco’s 1869 suspension bridge helped transform the settlement from a small frontier town to a major commercial center

The Wonders of Waco

One day excursion

Your day in Waco is designed to showcase the numerous quality museums and the intriguing background of this Brazos River town. Our first stop will be the TEXAS RANGERS MUSEUM - the law officers, not the baseball team! This site is dedicated to one of the most visible of the Texas western symbols, the lawmen who brought order to the wild and unruly west of legendary Texas.

Lunch will be at the RIVER SQUARE CENTER, a revived riverfront area of downtown replete with restaurants and shops. Because there is such a choice of restaurants, your travelers will be able to dine on their own where they wish.

The afternoon will begin with a stop at the DR PEPPER MUSEUM, where we will see displays devoted to that wonderful Texas soft drink. Those who want to indulge may partake of their delectable Dr Pepper Sundaes! Then we are off on a driving tour of the important sites of Waco, highlighted by the graceful and historic Suspension Bridge, the Baylor University campus, downtown, and attractive 19th century homes.

On the Baylor campus we will visit two nationally recognized museums, the BROWNING MUSEUM, housing the world’s most important collection of information and artifacts relating to this famous Victorian poet (“God’s in his heaven and all’s right with the world!”), as well as the world’s largest collection of secular stained glass windows. The second stop will be the MAYBORN MUSEUM, where we will see the remains of a herd of wooly mammoths that were all wiped out by the same geologic event. A fascinating an eye-opening site!

For those coming to Waco from the north, stops are possible at the historic Czech heritage town of WEST where your group can sample their famous kolache pastries. This is also the site of the amazing "Crash at Crush", the greatest deliberately staged train wreck ever in Texas, a story well worth repeating.
